Use case: matter risk

Closed beta October 2026

Find the signals that deserve a matter-risk conversation.

MatterLayer gives teams a clearer view of changing activity and missing follow-through so risk can be investigated while there is still time to respond.

Matter brief

From signal to accountable action

01

The buyer problem: risk becomes visible too late

Matter risk can emerge through a combination of quiet changes rather than one definitive event. A missed follow-up, unusual inactivity or shifting workload may be harmless on its own, yet still deserve attention in context. Teams need a way to focus review without flooding lawyers with alerts or suggesting that an operating signal has already established a legal, professional or client-risk conclusion.

02

Watch for change, not noise

Focus attention on combinations of matter signals that may justify human review rather than treating every alert as a conclusion. The operating pattern should identify why the matter entered review, which source context is available and what remains unknown. Thresholds and rules need to reflect the firm’s practice, because the same pattern can mean something different across matter types, teams and stages.

03

Give reviewers the evidence

Make the relevant history and operating context easy to inspect before a lawyer or leader decides what to do. The reviewer should be able to dismiss a weak prompt, request more information or escalate a concern without losing the trail. MatterLayer does not replace file review, supervision or professional judgement, and incomplete source data must remain visible rather than being converted into false confidence.

04

Implement with exceptions in view

Choose a recurring risk-review question, identify the responsible role and test it against representative matters, including cases where the expected pattern is misleading. Agree notification volume, response timing, access, escalation and closure. Capture why prompts were accepted or rejected so the Pilot can be tuned. Do not expand merely because the system generated a large number of observations.

05

Measure whether the loop closes responsibly

Assess whether relevant matters reach an authorised reviewer earlier, whether evidence is easier to locate and whether follow-up ownership is clearer. Track false positives, missed context, duplicate prompts and unresolved items as seriously as accepted alerts. Those observations can support a decision about the workflow; they cannot by themselves prove that losses, complaints or legal outcomes were prevented.
