A task list can show what is open without explaining whether the matter is genuinely blocked, waiting on a client or following an intentional variation. An Actionstep Pilot tests whether selected workflow and matter context can help the right person examine exceptions rather than merely producing more alerts.

Pilot operating pattern

Select one workflow family and document its expected stages, owners and exceptions. MatterLayer can surface an agreed Actionstep signal with related context for review. The authorised user decides whether to follow up, correct the source record, escalate the matter or leave the workflow unchanged.

Boundaries and limitations

No particular Actionstep API, configuration or action capability is promised. The firm must validate available data, permissions and the meaning of workflow states. Automated interpretation can be wrong when a process varies, and Actionstep is not represented as a partner or endorser.

Implementation discussion

Map the Pilot to the firm’s actual workflow design and test exceptions before routine cases. Agree approval checkpoints, notification volume and ownership of changes. If an action could alter matter work, require an explicit authorisation and review path rather than assuming the connection can execute it.

Measured Pilot outcome

Evaluate whether the exception review becomes easier to explain, whether duplicate checking falls and whether unresolved follow-up has a clearer owner. Track incorrect routing and legitimate deviations. The evidence supports a decision about the workflow, not a claim of customer success or improved legal outcomes.
